Helping Student-Athletes Train Smarter, Recover Better, and Understand the Science of Their Bodies

I’m Matthew Gavrilov, an ex national-level tennis player turned future med student, building a bridge between athletic performance and human health.

Mission

I’ve lived the life of a student-athlete, the early mornings, the relentless training, the victories, and the heartbreaks. I’ve also felt the limits of the human body firsthand: pushed past exhaustion, battled injury, and faced the mental toll of an identity built on performance.

This site is born from those moments, from the searing calf cramp that ended my Texas Grand Slam run, to the long nights spent digging into the science of muscle physiology and recovery.

From Court to Clinic is my way of giving back: a platform where student-athletes can learn to train smarter, recover better, and understand the science behind their own performance. It’s where athletic passion meets medical purpose and where healing begins not just with medicine, but with knowledge, empathy, and human connection.

My Story

I grew up chasing tennis balls across courts under the scorching Texas sun, competing against the best players in the state. Ranked as high as top 10 in Texas, I dedicated more than a decade of my life to the sport, competing in national tournaments from Florida to Georgia. Tennis was more than a game — it was my identity. Every forehand, every serve, every 5 a.m. practice felt like a step closer to mastery. But on the court, pushing yourself to the edge is both the standard and the risk.

During the quarterfinals of the Texas Grand Slam — one of the biggest tournaments in the state — I was on the brink of victory after a grueling match. Then it hit: a sharp, lightning-bolt cramp tore through my calf mid-serve. I tried to continue after a medical timeout, but my body had already shut down. I had to retire from the match — and in that moment, I began to realize that no amount of preparation or mental toughness can always overcome the body’s limits.

That moment was a turning point. I couldn’t stop asking: Why does this happen? What’s going on inside my muscles? I began diving into physiology textbooks and academic papers, learning about ATP depletion, calcium ion channels, and neuromuscular fatigue — concepts that explained what my body had endured. What started as a personal obsession turned into a passion for understanding human biology and, eventually, medicine. Later, during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic and while helping others through physical and mental challenges, I found the deeper meaning of healing — not just through science, but through empathy.

From Court to Clinic is where I bring those two worlds together. It’s a space for student-athletes who want to train smarter, recover better, and understand the incredible complexity of their own bodies. It’s also where I continue my journey toward becoming a physician — one post, one reflection, one conversation at a time.
